Each of Norby’s Shaman images is based on the simple triangular wedge. Just as the hourglass represents the female figure, this wedge embodies the simple masculin build, which is wide at the shoulders and tapers through the figure to his feet. The lateral view has been modified emphasizing the Shaman’s shoulder curve and buttocks to amplify the first impression that this is a “man masquerading as an animal.” As your eye drops to the bottom of the figure, however, the contour of the robe does not accurately follow the curve of the man’s leg. Only when you continue to turn the sculpture do you learn that this “man” has the feet of a four-legged animal. The Bison, the Elk, the Moose … where does reality spearate from fantasy? Is this man masquerading as animal or is this an animal in the guise of a man? Or is the reality that one is becoming the other?
